2 Minutes. Go!

Write whatever you want in the 'comments' section on this blog post. Play as many times as you like. #breaktheblog! You have two minutes (give or take a few seconds ... no pressure!). Have fun. The more people who play, the more fun it is. So, tell a friend. Then send 'em here to read your 'two' and encourage them to play.

She was waiting in my office when I got there, and I don't leave the door unlocked. Never. Tricks of the trade and all that. I wasn’t worried about it; the lock could be picked by a third-grader with a bobby pin. In fact, I was impressed. It didn’t hurt that she looked like Marilyn with black hair and the kind of body that altered gravitational fields. She was magnetically charged. So was I. I started wondering whether we would attract or repel. Her red dress revealed much.

“Ma’am?”

“Mr. Saunders. I’m sorry I had to … let myself in. I can’t be seen here. Anywhere really. That’s why I’m here.”

“Somebody’s looking for you?”

“Yeah. Cops.”

“Ma’am, I’m gonna stop you right there. I don’t mess with the blues, and they leave me alone. I don’t…”

“It’s a frame up.”

That’s usually a guarantee of guilt right there, but her eyelashes were practically tickling my chin, so I bit.

“Who framed you?”

“I don’t know.”

“What are they saying you did?”

“Murder.”

“And you didn’t.”

“Of course not.”

She smiled. Didn’t look a bit offended. That set off all the red, blinking lights and whistles, but I was still enjoying the way she smelled – like cigarettes, butterscotch, and perfume people like me can’t afford. She was dressed to the nines, too. Her fur could have covered the rent on my office for half a year.

I reached into the desk drawer and pulled out a bottle of scotch.

“Drink?”

“Please.”

So, I made the fucking drinks. I even lit her a cigarette. Ain’t I a goddamn prince?

“Do you believe me?”

“That doesn’t really matter.”

“I’ll pay whatever you ask.”

She said it in a way that meant maybe more than greenbacks, and I wasn’t sure if I was happy, angry, or tired. I yawned. Adjusted my pants.

“Would you tell me if you did do it?”

“No.”

“Smart.”

“I try.”

I put my worn boots on the table and lit a cigarette. I took a deep drag and let the smoke envelope my face. Even through the smoke, she looked like a goddess. You gotta worry about all of them, but especially the pretty ones. The prettier dames are, the worse off you are. Cinch.

“So, what do you want me to do? Start poking around?”

She smiled bayonets.

“No, Mr. Saunders; I want you to kill my husband.”

A sip of scotch got caught sideways in my throat. I coughed for a good thirty seconds, but she didn’t move a muscle.

“Listen, lady. You are very, very pretty. You also seem crazy and misinformed. I’m not a hired killer. I’m a detective.”

“Everybody has a price.”

“Not me.”

She passed me an envelope,  and I took it. I expected it to be fat with cash. No such luck. Maybe just an offensively large check, then? But no. It was a polaroid picture. A picture. Of me. A picture of me that would put me back in prison for the rest of my life. I thought I’d destroyed all the evidence. The picture was like a punch to the solar plexus. My hands were shaking as I filled my glass and watered the table with cheap liquor.

“Where did you get that?”

“Doesn’t matter.”

“I guess not.”

She pulled out another envelope. This one was as thick as a Presbyterian’s skull. I looked inside. Enough money to buy my way out of the game. I extended my palms. She stood up and walked slowly around the desk, making sure I was watching every little hip twitch.

“Can I ask why you want your husband dead?”

“Sure, doll. I’m tired of him, but divorce is so unseemly.”

I was about to tell her to take a leap, but then I looked at the picture. It wasn’t as bad as it looked, but it looked plenty bad, and I had no convenient explanation. She sat down on my lap and looked into my eyes. She ran one manicured finger along my jaw. The jaw I hadn’t shaved for weeks.

“So, what do you think?”

“I think it’s time to make a terrible decision. Or a few.”

I took her on the desk. She was calling the shots, though. I was just too scared to do anything about it. And, well, she wasn’t ugly – it wasn’t a chore is what I’m saying. And there was a good chance I wouldn’t be seeing any women for a long, long time. No matter how it played out. Only thing I knew was that I was not calling any shots. On the desk or anywhere else.

When we finished and got decent, I grabbed my hat and overcoat and slipped a flask of scotch into my pocket. She freshened her lipstick and wrapped silk around her head. Big sunglasses. No point putting it off. I dragged a hand down my face and tried to look ready. It didn’t work.

2 Minutes. Go!

I am the blood from the slaughter. I am the glint off the huckster’s gold tooth. I am the sound of time imploding. I am filled with obsessive thoughts that bounce around inside my skull like buckshot. I am relatively strong for a weakling. I am relatively brave for a coward. I am the one that people seek out, and I don’t know why. I have been marked, but I don’t know where the mark is.

I am nailed to a cross of indifference. I’m fucking my life up fine without your interference. I am not a spy. I am not a crook. I have no security clearance. I’ll never be everything you want me to be, even if you give me a fair chance. Apathy and spite make everything right.

I am right. You are wrong. Care to dance?

I am a vessel of hypocrisy. I smell like old clothes. I hate myself, but not as much as I hate the rest of you. It could be worse. There’s that. There’s always that. Things could be worse. I have a shitty car and first world problems, but I don’t have dysentery. Not even a little bit.

I look at the sky and think pretentious things. I say things I think I believe and try to pretend I’m not pretending. I am my own harshest critic, and I cut myself way too much slack. I try to be good at the things that really matter and fuck everything else.

I’m a good dad. There’s that.

I am selfish and churlish and full of shit. I am the all-knowing jackass in the back of the room, throwing paper airplanes and making sarcastic comments. I am flip and arrogant. I know. A nun told me. In tears.

It was quite a day. Hell of an event.

I am too smart for my own good and too stupid to do the smart thing. I am just smart enough to always make the wrong decision, even if it is the right one. I am tired of the first person. I hate writing in it. I’m not fond of living in it. I’d rather live in the second person and talk about your stupid ass.

I’m not blind to my faults. I might be blind to my strengths. I might have more of one than the other, but I’m not saying. I am an explosion of red-winged blackbirds over a sunlit field. I am the bobber riding the gentle waves on the water’s surface. Potential? Stasis? It all depends on how you look at it. Aces.

I’m NOT a racist. There’s that.

I don’t care who you have sex with. Your sex life is none of my business. Do your thing.

I am scared, and I know you are scared. I keep telling myself things will be OK, but I’m not so sure I believe it. I’m afraid to check my mailbox ‘cause it might explode. I don’t know who I’ve pissed off – probably a lot of people. I’m small change. I’m nothing. I don’t even warrant an exploding mailbox.

I’m the guy that wrote all those books you tell yourself you’re going to read and never do. I’m the guy you expect to be really interested in your stupid job. The irony is not lost on me. But I don’t say a word.

Blasphemy.

I am typing these words that don’t even matter. They used to matter to me. I’m not sure anything matters anymore. I’m that guy glued to the news, masochistic chatters.

I don’t want to be a statistic. That would mean I exist and shit.

I want to be the puff of dust from a heron’s feet as it lifts into the warm air, searching for safer places to hunt. I am always aware. I am not so different from myself. You are me and everything else fits neatly on the shelf. Right beside your bowling trophy and your overflowing ashtray. Right where the books would be if you were more like me.

Don’t be like me. It’s not working out the way I thought it would, G.

2 Minutes.

What do you want to be when you grow up? Happy? I want to work too hard for too little money and spend my free time in an ongoing panic attack. I want to have kids I can’t afford to take to Disneyland. I hate Disneyland, but it would mean so much to them. I want to see the disappointment in their tiny faces when I explain that just because "every other kid" gets to go to Disneyland, that doesn’t mean that WE can afford it.

I want to spend hours explaining to my kids why we don’t have a house. Why we live in an apartment. And I want to try and do it without giving them the impression we’re poor. I want to watch them smile and say, “I understand, Dadda.” I know they don’t understand. They don’t want me to feel bad. I should appreciate that more. I don’t want to, though.

I want to grow up and become a teacher. I want to get laid off with absolutely no warning after my first daughter is born. I want it to be from a job I poured my heart and soul into - I want to spiral into a depression where all I can do is write, drink, and OD enough to keep things interesting. I want to be broken when my youngest is small so it fucks her brain up real good. I want to hit rock bottom so many times that it doesn’t even hurt anymore.

I want people I love to die from bullshit diseases and overdoses. I want a sociopathic, narcissistic asshole to be president. I want people starving in “the greatest county on earth!” while politicians take private jets to get in a round of golf. I want to watch others worse off than myself. And I want to try and reconcile the fact that some people have more money than small countries and some people starve, stretching out their food stamps.

Before I get laid off from that teaching job I mentioned, I want to work with kids from the hood. I want to have to explain to them that, though it makes no fucking sense, they cannot talk to the police the same way I do. I want my white privilege to become a burden. I want to see their beautiful lives destroyed by bullets and bad decisions. Most made out alright. I want to be proud of that. I want them to be taken from me without warning. I want to try to pretend my heart isn't broken.

I want to drive a fifteen year old car with a broken seat. I want to be the dad some parents are wary of because I have tattoos and a motorcycle and I dress weird and don't care about wine or baseball. I want to be JUDGED. Constantly. I want to feel judged and I want to be judged. Dismissed. Written off.

I want to spend my whole life trying to perfect a craft that sixteen people give a shit about. I want to dedicate years of my life to creative endeavors that COST me money. I want to give people my songs and stories because I hate the idea of selling them. I want to be the worst capitalist ever.

I want to treat my body badly, so it turns on me when I’m older. So I can’t shoot hoops with my girls without being in pain. I want to play high school football and have the coach grab my facemask and scream into my face. I want him to tell me to plant my head in the runner’s gut. I want a broken back and chronic neck pain.

I want to be the kind of person who writes pathetic, emo bullshit and tries to pass it off as flash fiction. I want to fail, to have the things I’m most proud of ignored. I want to lose the respect of my peers because my brain can’t stop being sixteen, and I haven’t figured out the adult rules yet.

Above all, I want to live.
